Global Wheels 2+1

Self-contained or non-self-contained campervan – which one is right for you?

A self-contained campervan is ideal for travellers who want maximum freedom and independence. With a built-in toilet, fresh water supply, and wastewater tank, you’re fully equipped to camp off the main tourist routes and experience nature without limits — whether you’re exploring New Zealand’s rugged coastlines or Australia’s vast Outback.

But don’t worry – you can enjoy both countries just as wonderfully in a non-self-contained campervan! In New Zealand, the Department of Conservation (DOC) manages hundreds of scenic campsites with toilet facilities, where certification isn’t required. In Australia, you’ll find a huge network of national park and council campgrounds offering basic facilities at beautiful natural locations.

💡 Travel tip: With New Zealand’s affordable DOC Camping Pass, you can stay up to 30 nights on DOC sites for around 95 NZD – a great way to experience nature sustainably and economically.
